What is Contemporary Art?
(현대미술이란 무엇인가?)
What is contemporary art? This new style of art, often called ‘Hyundai Misul’(or ‘Dongshidae Misul’) in Korea, can refer to all kinds of artwork being produced today? Could everything or any media pass as contemporary art, as Arthur Danto suggested in his notion of ‘the end of art’? But the fact is that when art historians will write a history of the early 21st century art in their regions a hundred years later from now, only a few artists active today will leave their names in history. In short, contemporary art is He art of our time.
According to relevant experts such as Luis Camnitzer, Terry Smith, Boris Groys, Gao Minglu, Alexander Alberro, Okwui Enwezor, et al., contemporary art is referred as a mode of art dealing with the dynamic issues of ‘the present or the contemporary’ by means of diverse media and conceptual strategies, and its main stages comprise ‘documenta’ in Kassel, some well-known biennales in Venice, Sao Paullo, Gwangju, and MoCAs in such cities as New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, etc.
The reason why contemporary art today is of significance in each region of the world is not just because it is the very style of art that come to record the region’s history of art but also because it is the very creative practice that leads today’s contemporary art and culture. This exhibition expects to provide a momentum whereby artists and citizens in the region may better understand the stream of contemporary art, and thereby create, criticize, or appreciate contemporary artworks.
